What Is the Switchback Stitch™?
The Switchback Stitch™ is a distinctive zig-zag stitch incorporated across Matador’s new bag collection as a consistent mark of source.
We created it for a straightforward reason: to help protect our original products and brand from counterfeits, knockoffs, and imitations.
Product design has become easier to copy than ever. A successful product can be photographed, reverse-engineered, reproduced, and brought to market quickly, often by companies that made none of the original investment in design, development, testing, materials, or construction.
For an independent product brand, that creates a real challenge. A name or logo can identify who made a product, but those elements are often limited to a small label, patch, or printed mark. The broader product design can still be copied closely enough to create confusion, capitalize on the original work, or make an imitation appear connected to the company that created it.
The Switchback Stitch™ is one way we are addressing that problem.
By incorporating the same recognizable stitch across our collection, we are creating a visual signature that is built directly into the products themselves. It is intended to identify Matador as the source of the design and help customers distinguish genuine Matador products from copies.
A protectable and recognizable design element can become a powerful tool for a brand. Once customers consistently associate a particular visual feature with one company, that feature can carry meaning beyond its decorative appearance. It can identify where the product came from, represent the work behind it, and make it more difficult for imitators to copy the overall design without also copying a recognizable part of the brand.
That recognition does not happen automatically. It is built through consistent use over time.
Beginning with this collection, the Switchback Stitch™ will appear across Matador bags as a recurring signature. Its proportions and applications may adapt to different products, but the recognizable zig-zag form will remain consistent. Our goal is for it to become immediately associated with Matador in the same way other longstanding visual brand elements identify the companies behind them.
The stitch is also a symbol of the work that goes into each Matador product. Every bag begins with original design, extensive development, material selection, prototyping, testing, and refinement. The Switchback Stitch™ represents that process and the people responsible for it.
It is not meant to suggest that a stitch alone can guarantee authenticity. Counterfeiters can copy logos, labels, packaging, and other visual elements. The purpose of a source-identifying mark is to establish ownership, recognition, and a clear connection between a distinctive design element and the company that created it.
Over time, that connection can help a brand protect its products and take action against companies that deliberately copy recognizable source-identifying features.
That is our intent with the Switchback Stitch™.
It is a signature detail created by Matador, used consistently across our products, and intended to help protect the originality of our designs and the integrity of our brand.
When you see the Switchback Stitch™, you should know where the design originated.
